Ten Things You Should Know About Mold Inspection in Los Angeles

1. Mold Exposure brings with it several potential health effects and symptoms including; asthma, as well as other respiratory complaints and allergic reactions.
2. Because there is no way to get rid of all of the mold spores in the air, the main way to control their growth is to keep the area dry.
3. If mold has become a problem, you must physically remove the mold and dry the area.
4. Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
5. Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60%) to decrease mold growth by:

  • venting bathrooms, dryers, and other moisture-generating sources to the outside;
  • using air conditioners and de-humidifiers;
  • increasing ventilation; and using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dish washing, and cleaning.

6. Any damp or wet building materials and furnishings must be cleaned and dried within 24-48 hours to stop mold growth.
7. Completely clean hard non-porous surfaces with water and detergent, then dry. Porous materials such as wood and dry wall  may need to be replaced once they become moldy.
8. Reduce  condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, piping, exterior walls, roof, or floors) by adding insulation.
9. Where ever there is the potential for a constant source of moisture, do not install carpeting (i.e.,by classroom sinks, by drinking fountains, or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation).
10. Molds can be found just about anywhere; it grows on virtually any substance,
providing moisture is present. There are many molds that are able to grow on wood surfaces, paper, carpeting, and food.
